A community of practice enables collective learning and collaboration. Because the use of GIS in learning and research is so broad, no single person can have expertise in every area. A strong community of practice enables members to achieve more together than they could working alone. Yale University GIS Librarian Miriam Olivares describes the benefits of building a GIS community and provides advice for creating successful GIS services to support learning and research.
