Dr. Stephanie Deitrick uses sewage data derived from wastewater to inform city decisions, strategic policy and operational strategies. The City of Tempe first started using GIS for wastewater monitoring in 2017 in order to track opioid use. From this data they were able to tailor their community outreach efforts. Today they have expanded their wastewater testing programs and continue to use GIS to inform both the public and policy makers on public health issues the city faces.
