To be effective, conservation decisions should be owned by local communities and address the interconnected needs of people, other species, and their shared environment. Tacare is a holistic community-led approach envisioned by Dr. Jane Goodall and developed by the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) since 1994. Tacare focuses on community engagement, ensuring that local communities drive decisions on their own lands. Tacare builds on active listening, combining local knowledge and science to develop a common understanding and facilitating communities to develop and implement their own solutions. Tacare is complemented by a collection of community mapping apps. We will share the JGI and Roots & Shoots youth program's use of the Tacare approach to bring local stakeholders together to discuss, understand, map, and evaluate the values of their own natural resources in Tanzania.
