Quantuck Bay is an approximately two-square-mile body of saltwater situated on the southeastern part of Long Island. It is connected to the Atlantic Ocean through Moriches Bay in the west and Shinnecock Bay in the east. Over the past 15 years, there has been a noticeable darker color in the water column paired with a decline in water quality; as a resident of the area, this has been a concern of mine. In 2012, the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Project ("ShiRP") started efforts to restore the bay. Prior to ShiRP's involvement, there was very limited data recorded on the bay's conditions. Data from ShiRP, local governments, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was used to geodesign the area, showing the current conditions of the bay, conditions over time, and creating possible additional methods of restoration. ShiRP data has been recorded and analyzed from April 2012 through October 2018, focusing on temperatures, salinity, and dissolved oxygen contents.
