Countries have committed to place 10% of the ocean in marine protected areas (MPAs), yet we are only at 3% with many ecosystems unprotected. Here we discuss how Marine Conservation Institute's toolkit, MPAtlas.org, provides information on MPA coverage that is leveraged to track progress in international forums. We also show examples from our work in the US, which has protected more ocean than any other country yet still critically fails to create a representative MPA network across all regions.
