Since 2020, CAL FIRE has deployed several GIS-based technology solutions to compile, display, analyze, exploit and disseminate geospatial data and risk assessment on all wildland fires that are processed through our 22 Emergency Command Centers. These solution allow each fire that is reported in the IRWIN system to be simulated, categorized and a forecast displayed, including a fire behavior index, a terrain difficulty index and a growth potential index. This allows all Incident Commanders (ICs), supervisors, managers and responders to have an Initial Attack Assessment and map including a fire behavior forecast and automatic vehicle location. Analysts in the Unit Headquarters’ can refine and improve the analysis as better information comes in from the field, which is then distributed to those ICs and responders that need it most.
