As part of the Environment & Natural Resources Special Interest Group meeting at the 2021 Esri User Conference, the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) shares their innovative work using GIS to develop a solar siting potential app. Their app, built with ArcGIS Web AppBuilder and showcased on the Kentucky EEC Solar Siting Potential ArcGIS Hub site, helps the state in their efforts to develop reclaimed coal mine lands to house a source of renewable energy.
Kenya Stump, executive director of the Kentucky Office of Energy Policy, explores the economic and environmental justice needs that are driving the state to focus on solar development. Melissa Miracle, project manager for the Kentucky EEC, explains the technology used to create the solar siting potential app and also discusses future plans for the project using 3D and ArcGIS Pro.
