With the September 2021 release of ArcGIS Online, we added a new capability to Map Viewer called Effects. Effects bring Photoshop-like capabilities to your layers in your web maps. ArcGIS Online makes it very easy to try out simple visual effects that make your maps stand out and get noticed. The typical polygon choropleth math obscures where the population lives because the map’s colors are evenly spread across whatever polygons are used. What if you could make the populated areas stand up and be seen in your maps? In this example, you’ll see how to blend a layer of where population is concentrated with a layer of block groups, and then apply a drop shadow effect to those two layers to make a compelling visual effect.
