The Town of Old Saybrook is a coastal Connecticut community located on Long Island Sound at the confluence of the Connecticut River. Old Saybrook is highly vulnerable to coastal flooding and the effects of sea level rise. GZA has been working with the Town for several years to create resilience and sustainability to coastal flood risk. GZA first completed an extensive planning study, under a federal grant, to characterize flood hazards (flood levels and inundation, waves, wind and precipitation), evaluate vulnerability and predict future impacts and losses (risk) including property, transportation, essential services, lifeline facilities, natural resources and economic risk. Working with Town professionals, residents, and key stakeholders, GZA developed resilience strategies and measures including policies, zoning, building regulations, and physical projects. GZA is currently advancing projects through engineering, design, and construction, including a Living Shoreline pilot project. The ArcGIS Platform was integral to the entire process of engineering, design and construction as well as supporting planning, visualization, and communication. This presentation showcases GZA’s use of the ArcGIS Platform in supporting that process including development of authoritative geospatial layers, integration of GZA’s numerical flood and wave modeling results and scenario simulations during engineering and design.
