GeoDOT Local: A Common System for Infrastructure Investments
Seeing a need to create greater efficiency in managing infrastructure investments across the state, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) developed GeoDOT Local, a geocollaboration hub to connect the state to cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, simplifying the process of applying for and distributing infrastructure funds. Using a common geospatial infrastructure increases collaboration and enables more efficient grant and funding distribution, delivering equitable outcomes across the state. Discover how MassDOT is democratizing and automating how infrastructure funds and grants are distributed across the Commonwealth’s transportation infrastructure.
• The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) manages a multi-modal transportation system across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The foundation of their work is GeoDOT, an ArcGIS Online organization that provides access to data, dashboards and focused solutions for their customers.
• Distributing infrastructure funds to cities and towns in the state is time-consuming and challenging. The team built an ArcGIS Hub site, GeoDOT Local, and a series of applications to collaborate with municipal partners and streamline processes.
• Leveraging ArcGIS WebApp Builder and ArcGIS Enterprise, the MapIT tool for project intake has reduced project initiation time from months to days. And together with their Road Inventory Submission Application (RISA), MassDOT has seen an increase in the delivery of infrastructure funds to local partners.
• Understanding the community is important to ensure funds are equitably prioritized and distributed. Using dashboards, MassDOT can understand the character of the community before the project begins.
• A collaboration with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and the Massachusetts Highway Association resulted in the Mutual Aid Portal. MassDOT is facilitating collaboration between its customers by providing a place where cities and towns can help each other with assistance during an emergency. This portal enables everyone to share resources and see where assistance is needed.
• A great majority of municipalities now participate and collaborate within GeoDOT Local, improving the equitable distribution of infrastructure funds across the Commonwealth.
