Matt Felton, President of Datastory (an Esri Partner) discusses the story map he made for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments to assist the Greater Washington DC region’s efforts to attract Amazon’s HQ2 in the fall of 2018. The story map Felton created was incorporated into the individual proposals submitted by jurisdictions within the Washington region and included a comprehensive collection of maps and data that highlighted the strength of the region's workforce, education, housing, transportation access, diversity, and quality of life. Of the 20 finalists on Amazon's list, three of them were within the region highlighted by this story map. During this short interview, Felton shares some of the things “we love” about his map, including some of the mapping techniques and data sources (including ArcGIS Living Atlas data) he used to build the story map narrative. He also discusses some of the interesting patterns and insights that were gleaned from the data along the way. Felton’s “Amazon DMV” story map (“DMV” stands for DC, Maryland, Virginia) also took second place in the Infrastructure, Planning, and Government category of the 2018 Esri Storytelling with Maps contest.
