Frequent, convenient transit service isn't useful if that service doesn't take you valuable destinations, like your job, your school, the grocery store, the doctor's office, the airport, etc. To determine how easily people can access important destinations by transit, we need to understand where the transit service goes. If we can do that for an entire city, we can find out whether some areas have better access to important destinations than others, and we can use this information to understand other trends and to correct disparities.
This video provides an overview of the ArcGIS Network Analyst extension and discusses what it means to do network analysis with public transit data. We talk about the Service Area, Route, and OD Cost Matrix tools and about network datasets, and we explain how network analysis with transit data is different than ordinary analysis when you’re modeling driving or walking.
