The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is famous for opening new scientific vistas: molecular biology, gene sequencing, nanoscience, neuromorphic computing, quarks, quasars, seismology, and more. Less familiar is Caltech’s role in translating fundamental discoveries into technologies that improve people’s lives. These include catalytic converters to eliminate smog, early electric vehicles, modern-day electronics, and even surfboard design. At the Redlands Forum on May 30, 2024, Thomas Rosenbaum highlighted the stories and people behind these advances.
