Indigenous territories hold around 80% of the world's remaining biodiversity, with 65% of the world’s land being under indigenous or local community customary ownership and use. As such, the future of these areas rich in biodiversity remain in the hands of local people. Therefore, the key question is: How could conservation initiatives motivate and empower the greatest number of local people and institutions to take control of their own landscapes, and harmonize their land and natural resource use in a balance between people, animals, and the environment? The Jane Goodall Institute’s (JGI) community-driven, holistic approach to conservation – Tacare, facilitates local communities and governments to create sustainable livelihoods while advancing environmental protection. Tacare focuses on local ownership and participation by leveraging geospatial technologies, GeoDesign principles and other planning approaches such as Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation, to actively connect nature-based development with conservation and land-use planning at the community level. This creates a space in which local communities, managers, and government officials can collaborate and interact with geospatial data and models, filtering them through existing local knowledge, beliefs, traditions, values, experiences, and concerns while building trust. It fosters a dialogue between geospatial design solutions and local decision-makers, enabling them to act as drivers for positive change via meaningful and actionable information products. Building on these efforts, new ArcGIS community planning solutions will be discussed that could be used to scale community-driven efforts and empower local stakeholders to better manage their lands and natural resources.
