We seek to understand the dynamics of coastal restoration as complex relationships between natural and human systems in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida. In our work, we recognize that public participation in restoration is largely driven by individual perceptions and stakeholder buy-in. To better understand individual motivations and perceptions of restoration in our study, we utilize qualitative sketch mapping in geographic information systems (GIS) contributed by online participants through a crowd-sourced website and through focus group participants. We seek answers to questions such as: how does a sense of place (or emotional attachment) factor into coastal restoration? Our approach offers a unique opportunity to understand human behavior in relation to a sense of place and environmental decision making.
