Most older industrial cities in the Great Lakes region have experienced significant population losses over the last 60 years, resulting in an increasing number of vacant properties. Through Geodesign techniques, vacant sites can be used to create cooler urban microclimates and protect vulnerable populations from the adverse effects of climate variability and change. The project team has been comparing remote sensing data with on-the-ground sensors to accurately describe the microclimates of key, archetypal urban development configurations. Ultimately, the project seeks to determine which urban design configurations are best suited to moderate the adverse impacts of climate change, and how we can then leverage our vacant urban land accordingly. The results of the project will be shared with our community development partners and key decision-makers in urban land use and development.
