As most crime numbers in Philadelphia continued to decline, 2017 saw a noticeable uptick in homicides and in September 2018 Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, in cooperation with the Philadelphia Police Department and other city agencies, formed the Violence Prevention and Reduction Strategy Working Group. This comprehensive plan to reduce gun violence in Philadelphia is using a data-driven approach to analyze, define, and address the problem. This plan is using elements of the proven strategies of community policing and intelligence-led policing into and sweeping crime reduction strategy called Operation Pinpoint. Operation Pinpoint is backed by a cloud hosted analytical platform in incorporating spatial and non-spatial data, based on the ArcGIS Platform. Philadelphia Police Department Analysts can utilize a massive data warehouse to analyze data from 20+ systems all in one platform. Applications are built and deployed by department GIS staff providing an ever-growing stack of tools to quickly access data, analyze and answer questions. Real-time GIS, core to the platform deployment allows PPD Commanders the ability to achieve situational awareness seamlessly though the ArcGIS Enterprise platform. The Philadelphia Police Departments innovative platform is unique in being fully cloud-based and utilizes the most advanced technology and services available on the Azure Government cloud.
