As part of the Environment & Natural Resources Special Interest Group meeting at the 2021 Esri User Conference, Ohio Department of Natural Resources (DNR) shares how they used GIS to develop their DETOUR trails app, the state’s resource for authoritative trails information. Jeff Swan, chief information officer for Ohio DNR, explains how the project involved them creating a comprehensive, statewide geographic database of trails and trailheads and then making that information available on both mobile and desktop environments. Phil Hoffman, program manager for the Ohio Division of Parks and Watercraft, provides a demonstration of the DETOUR mobile app, showing how users can search by using the map or by entering text, download maps for offline use, save their favorite trails, and provide feedback through the app. Donovan Powers, GIS manager for Ohio DNR, discusses the process for collecting and processing the data for over 7,000 miles of trails.
