This animated map shows the ebb and flow of tornado migrations in the continental United States. Using data from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, we aggregated over 50 years of tornado events from 1950 to 2018 broken down by month to create a map that seems to breathe as the patterns ebb and flow with the seasons. Animated data draws focus beyond individual hexes to the aggregate effect of the hexes synchronizing, blooming, and changing in waves.
