The price of crude oil affects gasoline prices everywhere, but the price at the pump in the U.S. can vary significantly by state. The differences are mostly due to state-level taxes and the relative proximity to pipelines and refineries. This map depicts a decade of gas price fluctuations. From the lows of 2014-2016 (primarily the result of surplus supply and low demand) to the price hikes that began around a year into the pandemic (demand increased as the country reopened, while production lagged behind) to the huge jump following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it’s been a wild ride.
