Overlapping marine protected areas (MPAs) and marine managed areas (MMAs) make overall assessments of marine protection challenging. At any given location in California’s marine waters, there are up to 20 managed areas that overlap, each with different restrictions and management objectives. ProtectedSeas has considered restrictions cumulatively across overlapping areas using grid analysis and other spatial aggregation techniques to provide new insights into overall protection, which can enable better marine planning and management.
